Projects

We have been honoured to work on the below bespoke projects (and many more).

  • The Singita and Kilnhouse collaboration started with our signature Shoreline clay colour. For more than 3 years, we've designed and made 7 unique ranges for 7 lodges across Africa. We matched their established luxury, handmade aesthetic to deepen their immersive experiences.

  • Reimagining the 'smoking gun' as a representation of all the hands behind the powerhouse marketing titans, Sunshinegun. We moulded and slip cast actual staff member's hands, creating 300 sculptural pieces across 5 glazes with unique scents, assembling ceramic and brass elements in the final product.

  • Babohi Lodge is focused on the water element as part of their guest experience. Our blue vessels are an extension of the theme with deep cobalt hues. Using an experimental method, we were able to create layers within the blue glazes giving it additional dimension.

  • Jamala Madikwe approached Kilnhouse to design and throw two unique sets of tableware. Soft green glaze and textured terracotta aesthetic for their all day dining needs. Grey stoneware with black glaze aesthetic for fine-dining guests in the evening.

  • Kilnhouse was commissioned to create an installation for the historic Kitchener’s building, inspiring a dialogue between tradition and a contemporary clay intervention. Kilnhouse crafted 130 hand-stamped terracotta ribbons and weaved them into a suspended arch, a nod to the transition between old and new.

  • Isibindi Africa Lodges are spread across the African continent. Kilnhouse had the pleasure of creating colour aligned, branded ceramic gifts for each of their outstanding lodges.

  • Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa has water carafes in three 3 different sizes for various applications - 250ml, 500ml and 1l. The terracotta pairs beautifully with the surrounds. Kilnhouse developed a system for the branding detail to be applied over a complex surface (vertical and horizontal curving).

  • An ongoing collaboration between Kilnhouse, Design Partnership and SPUR. The project includes two sizes of custom teal ceramic light pendants. The project combines hand-thrown and mechanically formed components—to honour the brand’s nostalgic identity while elevating it to the present day.

  • Kilhouse worked with Marthinus Ferreira to create an extensive range of crockery for his new venture at Jordan Wine Estate. The range includes ceramic knives, stacking bowls and plates, each made in a fiery terracotta, adding to the overall restaurant aesthetic.

  • Kilnhouse worked with the magical Motherland Coffee Company to create custom sized mugs (almost 500ml) for their stores across South Africa. They are sold as collectible merchandise, and used daily for all drinks.

  • Kilnhouse worked in collaboration with HesseKleinloog Studios to create unique vessels for the interior of Train on Bridge as well as the TOB restaurant. Bespoke hand-pinched salt and pepper pots were made to resemble stones whilst soap holders resemble mountain ranges with their stark spines coloured with smokey white and black detailing.

  • In collab with Oniro Studios, Kilnhouse developed a range of large vessels for the living spaces of the hotel, each vessel made to suit the specific aesthetic of the room it inhabits. Tall vessels hold strings of pearls in the dining area, painterly pots create fun in the gym and zig zagged planters hold the many plants in the reception area.

  • Kilnhouse worked with the terrific Terbodore Coffee to create custom coloured mugs for their stores across South Africa. They are sold as collectible merchandise.

  • Kilnhouse worked with Nooa to create a range of tumblers in various finishes for their cafe in Riyadh. Each vessel was hand thrown and decorated, made to resemble watercolour. Finished off with 24k gold bands to create continuity between the range.

A few more brands & beautiful people we’ve worked with...

So you need something custom…you’re in the right place!

Custom design is something that Kilnhouse thrives off of and develops new skills through. Industrial design is just one of the caps we wear around the studio and new product development is second nature here. If you’ve got an idea that you’d like to turn into a ceramic product, lets work together.

Most projects start with an idea and we like to take those ideas and give them dimensions, colour and function. We structure new projects as follows:

  1. First contact – The what.
  2. Details – Does this what have a specific colour, shape, volume, size or function?
    - Type of product/ product range
    - Volumes of vessels (mugs/tumblers) in milliliters
    - Pictures of the intended look/style
    - Any deadlines specific to the work
  3. Drawings - Lets explore some options…
  4. Samples - From approved sketches.
  5. Final production.

Lets bring the blue sky idea back down to Earth, clay specifically.
